Customer Reviews for Saxon Publishing Math 87, Third Edition

Saxon Publishing Math 87, Third Edition

The final stop for Saxon's middle school math, Math 8/7 continues teaching students the way they learn best...through incremental development of new material and continual review of the old. Following Math 7/6, concepts such as arithmetic calculation, measurements, geometry and other skills are reviewed, while new concepts such as pre-algebra, ratios, probability and statistics are introduced as preparation for upper level mathematics. Lessons contain a warm-up, introduction to new concepts, lesson practice where the new skill is practiced, and mixed practice, which is comprised of old and new problems.

Kit includes:
  • Student Text; 120 lessons, 931 pages
  • Tests and worksheets book; 229 pages, three-ring-punched
  • Solutions Manual; 381 pages.
  • All books are softcover, third edition.

There is some overlapping from the previous edition, as is usual with Saxon Math, but not annoyingly so. New concepts are explained well, my 11 year old is able to understand them herself with little or no help.

I had heard great things from others using Saxon Math and now I know why. I am very pleased with it in the short time we have been using it (we're up to lesson 10 -- 2 weeks). My child is also very happy with it....likes the format, likes the way the lessons are explained. We switched Math curriculum mid year due to previous one not explaining concepts enough and not giving enough practice on new concepts to be able to master and retain the new info. Frustration has been replaced with eagerness to do daily math lessons thanks to Saxon. Other pros: Solutions manual shows all the steps to solving each problem. Record keeping sheets make it easy to keep it all organized.

I'm working with a 17 year old young man who used Saxon to jump from third-grade proficiency in math to eighth grade proficiency in math in less than six months. A good curriculum.

I was looking on the web trying to get this 8/7 Saxon Math kit and it was a bidding war which, in the end I lost. Funny thing is that is sold for more than I paid at CBD!! I am very impressed at the value of this product!

My son is learning much easier with the Saxon math book than with the book he used last year. More thorough and he likes the fact that he's gettin it this year!

Easy to follow. The solution manual is very helpfull, specially if we as parents need a little help correcting the exercises. At first sight it looked too much problems for my kid, but he is managing it very well, and he likes it. We don`t skip any problems. It takes a little time, but I think it worthy.

Math 8/7 follows the same format as Math 7/6. Very repetitive so mathematical concepts get ingrained into the mind. Love the thoroughness of it.

I ordered this for my daughter after learning that what had been using had put her behind. She loves it so far. Which is a huge blessing. She has never really liked math but says that this is very good. The way it is taught, we bought the Saxon DVD's, is very explanatory. So as of right now I can say it is worth the money!!

I had high hopes for Saxon because it uses the spiral approach that our previous curriculum (CLE Sunrise edition) uses and garners such positive reviews. I had also hoped to find something to bring us through the high school years. However, Saxon 8/7 has been a disappointment for us even with the purchase of the DIVE cd.
We have found frustration with the lessons time and time again. A simple concept is spread out in such a lengthy and often unnecessarily complicated way that leaves both ds and I confused. (This aspect is not at all like CLE.) The math "language" is partly why I chose Saxon, but it is not providing the results I'd hoped for. (And this particular ds has excellent reading comprehension.) I will often teach it to him the way I was taught and the light goes on.
Another problem we have encountered is that a concept is taught with a simple example. However, when covered again in the lesson (and lessons thereafter) a more complicated version is given but there are no samples to show how. This has happened on several occasions.
It obviously works well for many, but we will not be returning to Saxon next year. If only CLE had their upper level Sunrise math levels completed...

I find Saxon very straight forward. My son can work on his own. It suits his learning style perfectly. I like how every chapter builds on the next and how the mixed practice reviews all the previous lessons frequently.

These books came quickly and in perfect condition! We are using them, and I just LOVE these homeschool books. They make it possible for me to teach my Autistic 10th grader myself, since he is unable to learn math without someone forcing him to continually pay attention! This was the best price I found anywhere also. Thanks!

Everything we expected. It is completely helpful in leading a youth into their next development of mathematics. The concepts are explained and the shown to the child and prepares them and also tests them on their knowledge regularly. I do recommend this to anyone who is looking for a math subject to use.

Saxon Math has saved the day. Not only is it written well, but my boys love the challenge. For the first time, everyone enjoys and "gets" math, even my "reluctant" learner. I am so impressed with this series, I look forward to working along side them. No fancy artwork or bright colors to distract, just the lesson in plain black and white. The teacher solution book is a must-have.

We have been using Saxon math products for several years now and have been extremely pleased with the curriculum. The fact sheets are like daily flash cards. Over the years we've improvised, like timing up instead of down, not timing at all for a while until he realized the time could be used to challenge himself instead of adding pressure.(Isn't that one of the great benefits of homeschooling--adjusting work to fit you own child's learning style.) The daily work of 30 problems, going over old concepts as well as the newly introduced, help to keep it all fresh and also to pinpoint repeated errors making it much easier to correct these mistakes early on. We use the DIVE dvd with the curriculum which has been a beneficial way to get him working more independently over the years. We've been through years when he spent two days on lessons for half the year but we stuck with this curriculum because I felt it offered a well rounded approach to teaching these skills and are now reaping the benefits. His review is 5 stars as well as mine.
