Bach's first performance of St. John Passion was on Good Friday in 1724. But he offered a revived version in 1725, with the opening chorus changed, one aria added, and three others replaced by more dramatic alternatives. A magnificent production conducted by Philippe Herreweghe. Add this to your collection. Two CDs.

I first heard St. John's Passion peformed in London many years ago. It was peformed in English. It was like listening to a powerful exposition of the passion narrative. I wondered how this recording would be since it is done in German, but the accompanying booklet with the text in both German and English has been very helpful. It has added to my enjoyment of the performance even though I have negligible German.
